Lily Hope makes wolf moss into a dye.

This free public event will focus on science in service to the weaving community, including with presentations by chemists Dr. Tami Lasseter Clare and PhD student Dario Durastanti visiting from Portland State University. The weavers’ gathering will be from 9AM until noon on Wednesday June 8, 2022 in the lecture hall at the Fr. Andrew P. Kashevaroff (APK) building located at 395 Whittier Street. Clare and Durastanti will report on the collaborative research of historic dyes used in Chilkat robes in the Alaska State Museum collection. Scientific analysis of the Chilkat Dye Project is part of the Pacific Northwest Conservation Science Consortium funded by the Mellon Foundation. Discussion with the chemists about future collaboration interests of the weaving community will be facilitated by weaver Lily Hope and Alaska State Museum conservator Dr. Ellen Carrlee.

At 11:00am there will be a sneak preview screening of the KTOO documentary “Weaving Our Identities” produced by Paige Sparks. This half-hour film will be episode two in the new KTOO series “ReVision Alaska” launching this fall. KTOO staff will also be present on the collaborative panel to answer questions. Chilkat and Ravenstail weavers will be working on their weaving projects in the atrium throughout the day.
