On Friday, October 4, the Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum will help kick off the Juneau Public Libraries' October Big Read of In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick, about the whaling ship Essex and the events that inspired Herman Melville's Moby Dick.

From 4:30-5:30, the Library will screen the 1914-1915 silent film Bowhead Hunting in the Arctic, or, The Cruise of the Whaler Herman. The film follows a whaling crew from San Francisco to the Arctic, with stops in Unalaska, St. Lawrence Island, King Island, and St. Michael, and features scenes of Alaska animals, interactions with Alaska Natives, and operations aboard the ship.

The Alaska State Museum is  open with FREE admission the first Friday of every month from 4:30–7pm.
